#1 Onions and Garlic
Onions and similar vegetables that are related contain substances that if eaten by your dog can damage his red blood cells. The plants related to onions include scallions, garlic, and shallots. Even though we know these vegetables to be common, you should be aware that they are some of the most dangerous veggies for your dog to consume!
Why it can be bad for dogs:
If your dog were to eat garlic or and onion, the more concentrated these vegetables are, the worse the effects would be on your dog. Even more alarming, it's likely that symptoms won't show up until days after a dog has consumed garlic or onions. According to Pet Poison Helpline, “Onion and garlic poisoning results in oxidative damage to the red blood cells (making the red blood cells more likely to rupture) and gastroenteritis (e.g., nausea, oral irritation, drooling, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea). Other clinical signs of anemia may be seen, and include lethargy, pale gums, an elevated heart rate, an increased respiratory rate, weakness, exercise intolerance, and collapse.”
What to do:
As you have read, since garlic and onions are so poisonous to your pet, if your pet shows signs of being poisoned get him to your veterinarian immediately; a blood transfusion may also be needed!
Garlic and onions aren’t the only common vegetable to watch out for. Check out the next one on the list on the next page:
