Why the Fear Free Vet Clinic Movement is Gaining Traction Everywhere

Pug at Vet

The veterinarian clinic we take our dog Max to is great in nearly every way except they don’t really like to have pet parents in the back with their pooch during the simplest of procedures. One day we boarded Max for a couple of days and told them to give the cute guy a bath and trim his nails while they were at it.

When we arrived to pick him up they told us Max was terrific, and they were just finishing up the nail trim, and he’d be right out. We did ask if we could go back and sit with him but were denied. The receptionist assured us again, “He’ll be right out.”

What followed were the screams and cries of what seemed to be a poor tortured dog in their back office. It could not be Max! We were sure of it. Max, after all, is a docile pup, and he was just getting a nail trim.

Finally, the cries stopped and out came our pooch, happy and so relieved to see us. “Was that Max?” we asked, referring to the cries. Yes. Some dogs just hate a nail trim.

  1. My pugs have never feared the vet. From the time they were puppies, they were spoiled with hugs, kisses, and treats when they went to the vet. Now they get excited when they go. My 14 year old pug even escapes the exam room frequently to go visit his favorite vet in the back of the clinic. I think the staff has so much influence on how a pet perceives their visits. My vet is the BEST!
