Like any parent, we worry about our little ones when they need to have a surgery or procedure that requires anesthesia. Whether it's a human child or one of our furry friends, we want to make certain they are not just getting the best of care but that they are safe too. This includes when they are being placed under a controlled unconsciousness, which is usually necessary so they don’t feel pain and don’t move during a procedure.
Now, to be clear, most healthy pets don’t have any problems with anesthesia. The risks are minor and your pooch may experience mild vomiting after recovery from anesthesia. Under the care of a trained veterinary office, your dog should be fine. If there is a problem it is usually procedure related but that is only in extreme cases.
However, having said this, the risks of anesthesia should always be considered along with the benefits. The risks and benefits of any alternatives to anesthesia should also be considered.
