While we have been trying to cut down on our meat consumption of late it’s a little more difficult to look into our doggy’s big brown eyes and tell him he has to give up meat too. If he could verbally answer us we picture him saying something like: “In your dreams, sister.”
Still, if the latest reports are to be believed, nearly twenty-five to thirty percent of the dogs and cats in the United States eat as much food, meats particularly, then all the people in France!
Naturally, we want to keep our pets in meat but there may be steps we can take to reduce their environmental impact. Or so says UCLA geography professor Gregory Okin. He also calculated that meat-eating by dogs and cats creates the equivalent of about 64 million tons of carbon dioxide a year, which has about the same climate impact as a year's worth of driving from 13.6 million cars! Wow.
