Hearing for humans is vital. Our hearing alerts us of on-coming traffic, allows us to hear what other people are saying, helps us learn new instructions, and also it helps us listen to enjoyable music. Where would we be without our ears?
In the same way, a dog's ears mean a lot to him as well. In fact, many would argue that a dog's ears are a lot more important to him than the importance of a human's ears. Why is this? Well, it's because a dog's ears are not just for hearing — they're key elements of their body language.
Remember, a dog can't talk like we do so he communicates via barking, sniffing, and using his ears. Once he figures out what's going on around him with his sense of smell and hearing he then can respond appropriately.
That's not all either. It turns out a dog has 18 muscles in each ear, or more or less depending on the breed. If you think about it that's a lot of muscles and this is what helps a dog rotate, tilt, and perform other movements with his ear.
A dog's ears are truly remarkable!
