What signs should you educate yourself about? Well obviously if your pup is not acting like himself and doesn't have a lot of energy, this is one of the first signs. Your pooch may also come down with a fever and suffer from joint swelling as well as show other signs that he's sicker than you realized.
Endemic areas include New England, the upper Ohio River Valley and the Pacific Northwest. Affected dogs can show some of the following signs:
1. Lameness
Polyarthritis (inflammation of multiple joints) can be an indicator of Borreliosis infection.2. Joint Swelling
In addition to the lameness, some affected dogs may experience visible joint swelling and joints that are tender to the touch.3. Fever
Clinically affected dogs will experience fevers and depression as their immune system struggles to deal with the invader..4. Swollen Lymph Nodes
As the immune system rallies to attack the foreign infections, sometimes owners will notice swelling near the original tick bite.5. Kidney or Heart Involvement
Some isolated cases will progress to more serious complications, but these difficulties are rare.
If your pup does show any of these signs take him to the vet right away to find out if he may have Lyme's disease. The good news is that treatment is available, and your pup should get well quickly. Even though it's scary to think about your furry best friend coming down with a scary disease, thankfully modern technology, even for dogs can help combat the most frightening of illnesses.
