Why Does My Dog Sleep So Much? The Truth Behind Doggy Sleep Patterns

If Fido seems to be sleeping more than normal or if her sleep schedule seems odd all of the sudden, she may have a health issue going on. Observe your Pug and keep a close eye on her — if this continues you may need to take her to the vet. Keep reading to learn more facts about your pup's sleeping patterns.

Does it seem Rover is always sleeping? It's not just your imagination. In fact, the time to worry is when your dog isn't sleeping as much as he used to.

Normal Sleeping Patterns
In fact, depending on the breed, your dog might sleep up to 18 hours a day. On average, though, a dog sleeps half the day away—about 12 hours or so.

Night Sleeping
Domestic dogs have adapted to their humans' schedules, though, and they might snooze the night away as long as they have a comfortable place for it.

REM Sleep
Just like humans, dogs experience REM—or rapid eye movement—sleep cycles. While it takes humans 90 minutes to reach REM, dogs will reach REM in about 15 minutes, according to Perfect Puppy Care.

Excessive Sleeping
While tons of napping is common, your dog should not be asleep all the time. In between naps, he should be active and moving around.

So the next time your Pug is snoring away, try not to wake her up. The Daily Puppy reminds us that she will need that short nap to keep up with you when you take her out to go running at the track!

Sleep is important for your doggy, but this doesn't mean she shouldn't be willing to have fun in between her sleeping in time. Enjoy your time with her when she's awake and maybe you'll be able to sneak in a few naps with her during the day too!
