Humans are very visual. It is probably our most dominate trait. A dog, on the other hand, interprets the world through their sense of smell. Many dog owners probably already know this about their dogs, since we visually see their cues of sniffing the air and identifying things with their nose.
Dogs are very intuitive and can read body language, particularly the body language of of people. Very similar to how we can read our dogs body language and behavior.
Think about it. You reach for your keys and your pup is immediately at the front door because he knows this means you're going out. As a matter of fact, if your pooch typically goes with you on your errands, they probably make a bee-line to the car the moment you open the door because they're anticipating your next move!
On the reverse, if you're sitting quietly on the sofa or your bed, working on your laptop or reading a book – what is the first thing your pooch will do when you put your book down or close your laptop? If he's like my dog Max, he'll jump up, because he knows this is a sign that you're getting up too. Why? Because you always do. And you've done it dozens of times – so he remembers!
