Do You Know if Fido’s Upset With You? You May be Surprised on How to Read the Signs as to Whether He’s Mad at You…

Read what the experts tell us below about your dog and if he really is angry with you – and what he may be doing to let you know he’s feeling unhappy. Domestication does not necessarily mean a pup is happy and jolly at all times. Who would want a Stepford Dog?

Experts say that, “mammals share the same basic neuro-anatomy related to emotions, the same neuro-physiology related to emotions (seratonin, dopamine, oxytocin to name a few) and many of the same behavioral reactions.”

The consensus seems to be, however, that though they can experience anger, it is usually immediate and results in various forms and intensities of what might be called “rage.”

Scientists say that dogs “live in the moment”, and neither harbor grudges nor seek retribution. Dog behaviorists claim that the overturned trash can, or the ripped couch, or the doo doo on the bed are more responses than revenge. Dogs definitely have good memories and studies are being conducted on war dogs who some believe are experiencing PTSD. “Living in the moment” doesn’t mean that they don’t remember frightening or stressful experiences. They do and then they can later have reactions to those traumatic memories but more research will have to be done.

While our pooch may not “harbor grudges nor seek retribution” I have to wonder about it when I come home to a shredded doggie door or nearly break my ankle, stepping into one of Max’s freshly dug pot holes!

For more information go to Dogtime.

On the brighter side, all the results of guilt, leaving your pooch behind when you take a hike in the woods, may make you a better best friend! After all, you wouldn’t want to be left behind, would you?
