Cues Fur Babies Pick up on to Comfort Their Humans

Jessica Vogelsang is a hospice veterinarian and author. She knows first hand how a dog can “feel” when the sad and dying are in its presence. She is director of Paws Into Grace in Southern California,  Her own mother had an inoperable brain tumor and their dog stayed by the woman’s side until the end.

She says:

“They recognize fragile, slumped over, not moving as well,” Beaver said. “That's how they read each other. … They are great at it, and we are not.”

Some rest homes and hospices that have live-in dogs to comfort patients even use a dog's behavior — such as who the animal chooses to sleep with — as a sign to tell relatives to come say their goodbyes.

“A lot of resident dogs know those people and know something is different, whether the smell changes or they are moving less,” Beaver said.

Dogs also can help those dealing with other challenges.

In the book, Vogelsang introduces pets that got her through some life changes. As a little girl, her Lhasa Apso named Taffy helped her adjust to an unwanted move from New England to California.

Just after the birth of her first child, her golden retriever Emmett wouldn't leave her alone as she struggled with postpartum depression and a new career as a veterinarian. He gave her love, as well as looks that led to some soul-searching to get the help she needed, Vogelsang said.

Dr. Vogelsang's mother lived with her daughter’s family for her final months and, despite her declining health their dog was by her side as often as her husband! Then, when she passed the Golden Retriever mourned along with the rest of the family. Yet, life moves on and so has the pooch!

  1. Dogs really pick up on your emotions. They seem to reach out and give more affection when you are sick or upset. My dogs have given me kisses and stayed right by my side when I have felt sick or sad. They are great comforters. They can teach us humans a thing or two!

  2. Our little pug was with us from the time my son was in fifth grade till he got his masters degree and she was 17 years old. Hendi was his dog and did not hesitate to.make it known. Every joy every sorrow every family event was shared. It has been six years and there will never be another Hendi.

  3. My pug knows when I’m having a flare up with my multiple sclerosis … He has just known since day 1, 6 yrs ago.
It’s absolutely amazing to me . I couldn’t make it through the tough days without my love pug!
