Opossums, or simply possums, are weird looking animals but they have some good traits. They prefer to be alone, sticking to themselves, and leaving others to their own maneuvers. Yet, when threatened, they will “play possum,” appearing to be sick or dead.

Most do not realize this is an involuntary reaction, much like a person fainting – but it can work wonders for an opossum!

Although they seem rat-like they are actually marsupials, originating from South America and have a very flexible diet. And it is this diet, the small critters and insects they eat, that can help us foil sickness and disease! They may not be aware that they are doing it but it certainly helps mankind – not to mention dog-kind –  when it comes to devouring ticks and fleas!

Go over to the next page and read-up on how these impressive creatures are silently helping to prevent the spread of Lyme disease!
