You Won’t Believe What These Seniors Are Doing To Help Shelter Dogs

Craft sessions are a great way for the elderly to socialize and feel like they are doing a good act for homeless pets. Every day they can get together to craft and sew and see their progress as they continue to make more pet beds. This is a heart warming story that's sure to touch pet parents everywhere!

Byrnes, a resident at Mustang Creek Estates of Frisco, and a handful of other residents have been working all summer on making dog beds with fleece and polyester filling for the orphaned dogs at the Frisco Humane Society.

What started as a craft project has grown into a pet supplies drive with a goal of 50 beds by the end of the summer.

“Where are these going?” Record asked.
“The Humane Society,” Tipton said. “They’ll actually be going to families that take care of the pets.”

One bed for each pet
Mustang Creek Estates opened its Frisco location in May. The senior living community has locations in Allen and Keller as well and fashions itself as more of a neighborhood than a retirement facility.

It was her idea to make the dog beds. She’d helped organize other craft sessions, like making bird feeders for residents to hang outside their windows, and she wanted to help the Humane Society in June.

The goal is to make 50 beds, one for each foster pet with the Frisco Humane Society. The community is also a drop-off site for a pet supplies drive, collecting everything from pet toys to brushes and dog treats for the Humane Society.

Those donations mean a lot for foster pet owners like Heather Cox, dog coordinator for the Frisco Humane Society. Monetary donations help cover vet bills for her animals, but she has to pay for other things such as food and toys on her own.

The activity also helps the elderly residents keep up with their fine motor skills. Tying together fabric and stuffing the beds can be slow work for some of the women.
“Especially if they have arthritis or anything like that,” White-Burda said. “Keeps their joints active and moving.”

There are many activities that seniors can do to keep themselves mobile, but the fact that they can stay mobile and contribute to a great cause features on The Dallas Morning News is touching.

Pet beds are useful for foster homes for fur babies and will make the pups feel at home while they're waiting for their forever home. It's very heartwarming that these seniors are using their time for such a wonderful cause. It inspires us to do the same!
