If you already have a pug you do not necessarily have to be reminded why they are such a great canine companion. As you watch you might be surprised to learn pugs are the pride of Asian royalty and, in one instance, even saved a royal’s life! Now, that alone is worth the price of an adoption certificate!

  1. Pugs are the best breed on the planet, but I wouldn’t say they are low maintenance. Your Pug will want to be with his human 24/7. You owe it to him to provide plenty of ways to socialize with both other dogs and people. Pugs have no concept of personal space. Their feelings are easily hurt, and they are stubborn. Never yell at your Pug or use harsh methods of discipline. It won’t work, and it will break your special bond. House training can be a slow process because, while Pugs love to please, they also have short attention spans. Mine will often be so distracted outside that he forgets to potty and winds up using the pee pad inside instead. He was easily pee pad trained, but we are still working on pottyi g outside consistently and he is a year and a half. Keep your Pug away from the heat. Hot weather can kill a Pug because the breed cannot efficiently cool down. Provide time and space for plenty of exercise, and never overfeed your Pug. Pugs gain weight easily, and they are little beggars, if not outright thieves. An only Pug will most likely be a lonely Pug, so make sure he has at least one dog brother or sister. Your Pug has specific hygiene needs due to the deep folds on his face. These need to be gently cleaned, regularly, to prevent infection. Always protect your Pug’s eyes. They protrude from the face, making them susceptible to injuries. In general, a Pug’s care requirements are easy enough, and are part of the bonding ritual between a Pug and his person. You’ll never regret bringing one of these little goofballs into your home. And if you do, there are plenty of people out there who will be more than eager to adopt from you….so it’s a win/win.
