This New Dr. Seuss Book Has A ‘Pro Adoption’ Message From The Publishing House And We Love It!

After PETA President Ingrid Newkirk got in touch with Random House Children's Books, asking them to include a note requesting to address these concerns, they decided to do just that. We're so glad PETA took the stand because now there's an afterward in the book that discusses adopting dogs and other pets as opposed to shopping for them!

So when PETA Kids heard that a long-ignored Dr. Seuss book, What Pet Should I Get?, was about to be released—a book that tells the story of a brother and sister who visit a pet store in search of a new animal companion for their family—we were naturally very concerned that it would send the wrong message to young readers who don’t know what’s wrong with buying animals.

And we are pleased to report that the publishing company heard our request and included the below information about adopting animals from shelters in the book’s “Note From the Publisher” section:

PET STORES, LIKE THE ONE FEATURED IN DR. SEUSS’ NEW BOOK, SEND THE MESSAGE THAT ANIMALS ARE ONLY WORTH THE MONEY THAT SOMEONE IS WILLING TO PAY FOR THEM, WHICH IS NOT TRUE AND NOT OK.

YOU can help countless animals by always adopting from shelters and NEVER visiting or buying animals from pet stores or breeders. Spread the word so that others will know to do the same, and you’ll be a hero for animals!

So when in doubt, always adopt and don't shop for a new pet at a pet store. It's important to pledge always to adopt because there's an adorable Pug, Golden Retriever, Maltese, or whatever pup you decide to adopt waiting for you with open paws.

To stay up to date on the issue and encourage others to adopt as well, visit PETA Kids.
