As dog owners, we have all had that playtime moment when we’ll throw a ball or toy, and our pooch will run after it. Usually, they’re good and will bring it back to you. Yet how many times, especially before earnest training, did Fido trot back to you and then veered off, not wanting to give you the ball back?

We still have this problem to this day and it’s our own fault. Instead of teaching our pooch that he should not be so possessive we ran after him and stole it back and had a merry old time. It was fun at the time, but later on, it became a problem when we really needed our dog to give us the ball!

If we were smart, we would have laid down some ground rules early and taught him to stop that bad habit first. It’s not always a damaging to play with your dog, but not setting ground rules can progress into a problem over time.
