Dogs and Fireworks: Why it’s a Bad Combination

fireworks

We are coming up quickly on the Fourth of July, Independence Day, and with that comes a good time for many! Some are going to go to the beach, others have cook-outs, and then – when night falls – there is the joy of fireworks!

Colorful explosions in the sky that thrill us but, sadly, terrify our pets! Especially dogs.

We were never so aware of how frightened our pooch was of fireworks than when we were sitting out in our backyard, watching the nighttime fest coming from a local college. Max was by our side for most of the night but then, as the light show started, he quite literally started to freak-out!

He barked, and whined and while everyone else was having a wonderful time he quickly about-faced and ran inside the house away from all the noise and light. Later that night we found him whimpering in the corner of the living room, anywhere but outside where those ‘devil lights” and “monster noise” was coming from!

So no, from first-hand experience we can honestly say that dogs do not like fireworks and it is important that you keep your precious pooch away from all that excitement, for their health if nothing else. A frightened dog can easily put themselves in harm's way. Go to the next page to read up on how you can keep your pooch safe during fireworks!

  1. Many dogs benefit from having some kind of anti-anxiety medication on board if they are sensitive to the noise of fireworks and thunderstorms. Talk to your veterinarian about what they can recommend, for both mild and severe anxiety.
