I learned that it's all about using your imagination when it comes to keeping your dog entertained. Realize that they get bored, especially if they're particularly hyper. That means they need EXTRA stimulation to keep them occupied.
For example, when I leave her alone when I got to work, her energy isn't getting used up. So when I come home, she explodes! Activities help the most. Here are some I put to good use and can thankfully say… WORK.
Highly energetic dogs need ways to channel all their excess energy. Otherwise, they might find more destructive ways to use up their energy, such as destroying your belongings.
1. Chasing and Fetching
Play active games in the yard or park with your dog. If you have enough space in your home, you can play more subdued forms of these games inside.
Balls are always a favorite toy for high energy dogs; just be sure to get one that is the right size for your dog.
Flying discs such as the classic Frisbee is another favorite. This is a perfect activity for a high energy dog.
Your dog might find bubbles fun and fascinating. Your high energy dog will have a really good time chasing them all over the yard and popping them.
2. Obstacle Course
There are professional classes available with instructors who teach obstacle course training for competition or just for behavior training.
3. Swimming and Water Play
On a hot day, water play of some type is just the ticket for an active dog. Take your dog for a swim in a local lake, stream or swimming pool, if it is allowed.
4. Running
If you like to run, consider taking your dog with you when you go.
5. Walking and Hiking
Dogs love going for a walk. If you can’t go at a fast pace yourself, a walk will still help your active dog get exercise.
If you are into hiking, it is an excellent opportunity to get your dog involved in those treks as well.
Use your imagination when creating games and activities for your dog.
Ok, so 1, 4, and 5 are kind of no-brainers. BUT, I can admit that I didn't exercise Zoey nearly as much as I should have considering her energy level. I always thought that small dogs can't handle a lot of exercise, but that's not true. Now I take her with me on my morning run (ok, its more of a jog… but still).
#3 – unless you're lucky enough to have a pool or live by an awesome lake or the beach, this one is hard. But Zoey is small. So you know what that means? The bathtub! At first she wasn't thrilled. But now I have water toys for her and we a game out of it. Also, I realized she doesn't hate water that much…. she just hates baths. So as long as I'm not grabbing the soap, she's happy to splash around with me. I recommend starting off with 6 inches of water to get them used to it!
#2 – Make your own obstacle course. I got some cheap plastic cones in the kids section of the 99 cent store and I always keep my online shopping boxes. With that, I create a fun obstacle course for Zoey in my living room (that goes into my kitchen) and she has a blast. When we're done, I throw everything in the biggest box and tuck it under the dining table.
The best part? After 2 weeks of putting the aforementioned tips to use (and not skipping days), Zoey sleeps the whole night without waking me up. This is HUGE!
You can explore more ideas on Canidae. Have fun with it and after you have a routine going you'll have a healthy and happy dog that exerts his energy the right way!

Until the age of three, they are just going to be hyper. Playing helps of course, but let a new person come to visit and they are goi g to get excited at the prospect of a new person to play with.
Not everyone is suited to have a pug, but oh those of us that are, could not live without them!!!!!!
Many people just aren’t suited to get a puppy of any breed, because they lack the patience to train one. There is an excellent option, adopt a senior dog. Even senior pugs whose owner died, are mellow and most likely house trained.
If you have several dogs already, understand a dog from a single dog and single owner home is going to have an adjustment to becoming a member of a family pack.
Your life is richly enhanced by the love of a dog.

Please don’t tell people to run with their pugs. Pugs have short snouts which make it harder for them to cool off meaning it is very easy for them to overheat, which in extreme cases could kill them.
