I work in an animal hospital and was injured by a retractable leash. Also I could add that loose collars are problematic at the vets office, particularly. If your pet balks at gentle leading because he is scared, he could easily get loose, which is never a good situation when you don’t know the temperaments of other pets in the office. It’s all about safety!
