It would be a terrible shame to reach down and pet “Scruffy” one day only to realize, hours later, that you've caught Poison Ivy when you haven’t even been near the woods or infested areas!
Dogs love the great outdoors! And they love exploring new areas during walks or hikes – they're curious creatures by nature. But when Poison Ivy and your dog meet, your pup essentially becomes the host. Or as we like to put it, they become Walking Poison Ivy. The rash causing poison then transfers to you the next time you touch your pooch. Bleh!
While your dog cannot “catch” Poison Ivy, Oak or Sumac themselves (thank goodness!), they can certainly serve as a carrier and spread it unintentionally to any humans they come in contact with. When a pet owner realizes this has happened, what should they do?
On the following page, we'll show you exactly what to do when this occurs and give you a step-by-step guide to getting your pooch (and yourself) cared for!
