Summer is Coming. Here’s the Easy Way to Teach Your Doggie How to Swim

Does Fido know how to swim? Now you can teach him how!

Summer is right around the corner. If you’re planning on spending any time near water, now’s a good time to make sure your four-legged friend knows some swimming basics.
1. Play it safe.

It’s a good idea to get your dog a life vest or floatation device, especially if the pup is on the petite side.

2. Take things slow.

To begin your swimming lesson, find shallow, current-free water that allows you to walk next to your dog.

3. Promote proper paddling.

Make sure your dog is paddling with all four legs. Swimming with just two will wear her out more quickly, and probably splash you both in the process.

4. Make swimming fun.

If Sparky needs extra persuasion before dipping in his paws, bring along some of his favorite toys and treats to encourage him further into the water.

5. Remember to rinse.

Before you give Rex that celebratory kibble, thoroughly rinse his coat with clean water to remove any chemicals, sand or silt.

Teaching your dog how to swim is fun and easy. Just remember to be patient and understanding. It can still be very scary for your pooch at first.
