Is Pokemon Go Something That Could be Fun for Your Furry Friend Too?

We know, everyone is obsessed with Pokemon Go. Okay, maybe not everyone but mostly everyone. It's just too much fun ton pass up! Are you playing Pokemon Go?! You might want to include your doggy!

Over the last weekend, the augmented-reality game Pokémon Go took off like a rocket.

For dogs and pet parents, the game has also meant some significant sidewalk time. One person reviewing the game told the British newspaper The Guardian, “[M]y dog has never been walked so much in her life.”

Fresh air. Good neighbors. So far, so good, right? But, remember, any time you’re staring at your phone — whether it’s a game, a text or a Facebook post — you’re not paying attention to where you and the dog are headed. From traffic to trash to squirrels, a dog may walk right into danger. As this post about dog walking noted, be “observant of what’s going on around you. Loud noises, wildlife or even other dogs out on walks can be a distraction.”

If you’re walking a new dog or a pet you’re watching, it’s simple: Put down the phone. Lots of dog walkers we know even put their phones away during walks. Not only does it give them some time free of digital distractions, it allows them to bond with the pets better.

That doesn’t mean you can’t play the game if you’re out with your own, well-behaved dog. Just make sure you’ve stopped in a safe place, clear of any potential hazards and other dogs. It may sound obvious, but make sure you have a solid grip on the leash. Don’t hesitate to put the phone away if the dog needs your undivided attention.

While there is so much more time spent outdoors while playing Pokemon Go, you and your doggy can benefit from some quality time getting some fresh air! Just remember to be safe and be aware of your surroundings while you play! It's important to keep both you and your furry friend safe while you're having fun playing the game.
