Watching your dog through the years, observing how he has slowed down, is common. It had to happen eventually. But there will come a time when your pooch’s quality of life will be visibly altered. They go blind; hips become displaced, and some other physical problems emerge with age.
You will need to ask yourself many questions, including if it will be kinder to let him go peacefully or hold on through thick or thin.
But – if the latter – will you be doing your pup a kindness by keeping him alive although he may be suffering?
You can always consult a veterinarian. Most will be very honest with you about your dog's continued good or bad health. However, they cannot make a life-ending decision for you. Vets will dole out the medications for as long as you think Fido will take them but eventually, even the doc will advise you enough is enough – it’s time for you to decide.
And that is when you will have to ask yourself pointed questions about your pooch.
After the break check out the questionnaire provided. Do the positives out-weigh the negatives? Be honest with yourself – and your furry family member.

Mine started making this god awful hacking sound and it always seemed to happen the most during jeopardy so we had it put down. Was a great dog the 12 years we had it before it got the smokers lung.

My pug is 9 years old , but a few years ago he bit off a piece of his own tail not once , but twice , and had expensive surgery to repair the damage , and is now medicated daily for anxiety , but I was already informed that if for some reason he is able to do it a third time , it would be unrepairable & he would be left incontinent & have severe nerve damage & have to put down sadly , I just now pray that he makes til the end & goes with old age !!! He is much better & happier now 🙂

It’s time to say goodbye when their physical limitations outweigh the positive. I just lost my father pug 3 weeks ago. He was a part of my heart and he took it with him. I tried everything, spent lots of money I didnt have for vet bills. He lived about a year longer. I don’t regret it; I just really miss my Buster. I still have 2 others: my mother pug and 1 of her off springs. This does not replace my poppy dog.

They are too cute. I love senior pugs the most. They will let you know when they are ready and not a moment sooner. Cherish every day.

I know sooner of later me all have to go in life. But when one is suffering and you love them so, it’s hard to say goodbye. But we do what’s best for our pets and all remember the good time we spend and the joy they brought you.

Awww thank you Tabitha. It was a good read. Unfortunately I do believe the time is near. No pain. But I just don’t think I can watch it anymore. He’s no longer the fiesty spitfire he use to be. The loss of his senses doesn’t make much of a good quality of life for him. Such a hard decision my friend.

I’m sorry, I had to say goodbye to my Tommy in March after 17 years too. It will get easier and before long it will be comforting to wrap yourself in happy memories, and not in the sadness.
