Excellent Tips To Prevent Your Dog From Barking on Walks

No pet owner likes dealing with a barky pup during a walk, but if you happen to have a dog who likes to bark there are some ways to remedy or at least improve the situation. Your dog may have had a bad experience with another dog in the past if they were adopted or have not been socialized enough. Whatever the case may be, check out the following tips on how to improve your walking situation:

• When out walking your dog, if you see an oncoming dog, calmly turn your dog and begin walking in the opposite direction.
• If walking in the opposite direction is not possible, calmly and safely walk your dog across the street so you’re not heading directly into the path of the oncoming dog.
• If you have a small dog, pick him up when another dog approaches and turn so his head is facing away from the oncoming dog.
• Enlist the help of a friend and practice walking your dogs toward each other.
• When you see another dog coming, practice commands such as watch me, sit, down, heel to distract his attention and be sure to treat and praise for each accomplishment.
• If you can’t control your dog, use the tools you need, depending upon your dog such as a head halter, prong collar, martingale, ecollar, etc. If you don’t know how to humanely and safely use these tools, consult with a trainer,
• Never allow your dog to stare at other dogs for longer than two seconds.
• Stay relaxed, calm, confident, and in control so your dog feels relaxed.
• Contact a trainer for help if you need it.
