It’s so commonly used in DIY recipes, suggestions for training rewards and special treats but are peanut butters and nuts themselves really suitable to be given to dogs?

Some nuts are safe and some aren’t.

Peanut butter is suitable for dogs.

Not only is it a good source of protein, but it also contains heart healthy fats, vitamin B, niacin, and vitamin E, BUT there are some very important guidelines you should follow to make sure you are choosing a dog friendly peanut butter and feeding it to them correctly.

1.  Choose raw, unsalted peanut butter

The best bet to avoid your dog getting lots of unwanted additives is to always read the label carefully and opt for raw and all-natural peanut butters that don’t have any added salt,  sugar or extra flavours or ingredients.

2. Absolutely do not use brands that contain Xylitol

Unfortunately, while xylitol appears to be perfectly safe for people, it is extremely dangerous for dogs — even in small quantities.

3. Feed in moderation

It is important to note that while peanut butter is safe for dogs, it is very high in fat.

4. Be aware that dogs can have an allergic reaction to peanut butter

Just like with humans, a very small number of dogs may have peanut allergies.

5. Not all nut butters and nuts are safe for dogs!

Here is a list of what to avoid, and if ever in doubt simply forgo the treat until you can confirm it’s not one of the bad ones!

Almonds

Cashews & Brazil nuts

Macadamia

Walnuts

Pistachios

6. Is chunky or smooth better for dogs?

Both are fine, but if you have a small dog, a puppy, or a dog that scoffs without chewing their food then it could be wiser to opt for the smooth kind.
