Ever Wonder Why Your Dog Tilts Their Head When You Talk To Them?

Ok… let me set the scene here. I'm sitting on my sofa watching TV with my dog is resting peacefully on my lap. I'm channel surfing and land on a station that has little baby chicks running across the screen. Suddenly, my dog raises his head in full alert mode. He's looking at the TV with his eyes bugging out and then it starts…

The head tilting.

First to the right then back to the left. It was completely adorable to see but honestly I wasn't not sure if it was caused by the sound of the chicks, him seeing them, or a combo of the two that captured his attention.

It is such a cute movement, that slight cock of the head. There are a lot of different theories as to why dogs do this. My dog Max has seldom done this movement since the humorous Animal Planet (c) chick episode on TV but I'm very curious about what was going through his mind.

Then I found THIS.

If you will go over to page 2 you can read about some interesting theories as to why our pups tilt their heads when we speak to them.

  1. Pugs really try to understand you ! My sister’s pug will tilt his head at many, many words that he knows and new ones he’s trying to figure out. Makes it weird for me when around other types of dogs cause they just don’t seem to engage like a pug does !

  2. Plus, the dogs inner ears are different than ours, so that they cannot easily identify the source of a sound from above or below when their heads are oriented such that the two ears are at the same position vertically. They can hear it, but not locate it.
