pug and medication

These over the counter medications are safe to give your pooch! Find out which ones are ok and which ones you should avoid below!

Did you know that there are many over-the-counter human medications that can be safe and effective for dogs, when used correctly?

However, dosages for dogs are much different than for humans.

Always check with your veterinarian that understands your pet’s health and history before giving any medications.

Benadryl

Treats allergies and itching.

Canine Dose: 1/2-1mg per pound of body weight. Maximum dose 2mg/lb.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Used to induce vomiting after accidental ingestion of poisons.

Canine Dose: 10ml by mouth. Repeat in 15 minutes if not vomiting.

Robitussin DM

Relieves coughing and hacking.

Canine Dose: 1 teaspoon per 20 pounds of body weight every 8-12 hours.

Pepto Bismol

Relieves diarrhea, vomiting, and gas.

Canine Dose: 1 teaspoon per 5 pounds of body weight or 1 caplet per 20 pounds every 6 hours.

Ibuprofen and Tylenol

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT USE!

Even though it's safe to give our pooches over the counter medicines, it's important to get them to the vet as soon as you're able to. Remember, avoid Ibuprofen and Tylenol AT ALL COSTS!

  1. The list did not include baby asprin. Vet told us we could give our pup a quarter baby asprin dose when he was bitten by a snake. We gave this to him every few hours for pain & fever until he got better. Caused no harm & made him feel better.

  2. Um I would never ever give any human medication to an animal ever. Get prescription meds from your vet. I’ve seen what happens when you use human medication on an animal. It can kill them.

  3. I will just wait until my vet allows me to. I love my pug too much to OD him. My mother is advised by our vet to give her Doberman daily Zyrtec and when she has a bad allergy day, Benadryl. Lol

  4. Just stop…this post is not appropriate AT ALL!! Please consult your veterinarian first before trying anything as there may be better options or some things may still not be appropriate for your pet. This was not even written by a veterinarian so please be safe and just ask your vet before trying anything. Dr.Google or any internet “Doctor” doesn’t know everything or fix everything. Be wise not easy.
